The short letter of Philemon tells a powerful, unfinished story; one that invites us to step inside the tension, pain, and hope of reconciliation. Over three weeks, students will explore this book through the eyes of the people who lived it and discover how the gospel calls us to forgiveness, restoration, and a new way of living with one another.
Week 1 – Onesimus: Reconciliation
The series begins through the eyes of Onesimus: a runaway slave, a man carrying fear, shame, and a past he can’t outrun. His story is full of tension: he fled Philemon’s household, he likely wronged Philemon, and now he’s face‑to‑face with the apostle Paul, who led him to Jesus. Suddenly, the man who ran away is being sent back to the very person he wronged.
This week explores the courage it takes to face broken relationships and the surprising ways God pursues reconciliation. Onesimus becomes a picture of how Christ meets us in our mess, transforms us, and then calls us to pursue peace with others. Students will see that reconciliation isn’t just a biblical idea; it’s a personal calling.
Week 2 – Philemon: Forgiveness
Week two shifts the spotlight to Philemon. What does this story feel like from Philemon’s side? He was a respected leader in the church, a man of faith and love, but he’d also been wronged and had a right to retaliate. Onesimus didn’t just leave; he likely caused real loss. And now Paul asked Philemon to do something radical: not just forgive, but welcome Onesimus back as a brother.
This week explores the emotional weight of forgiveness; the tension between justice and mercy, hurt and healing. Students will explore what forgiveness really costs and why it’s often the hardest part of the gospel to live out. This week challenges students to confront their own grudges, recognize the freedom that forgiveness brings, and see how the gospel reshapes the way we respond when we’ve been wronged.
Week 3 – Paul: Mediator
Paul: What does it mean to be a friend like Paul who is going to point others back to truth and the gospel of reconciliation, even when it doesn't feel good or you don't want to hear it? This type of friend knows the value of the unity of the body of Christ and wants to fight for it. On the other hand, we don't want to be someone who is going to "stir the pot" or continue the drama of the situation.
