In this vintage-themed icebreaker, your group will be presented with a romantic gift that someone in history gave to their significant other. The gifts range from extravagant, like the Taj Mahal, to the absurd, like being woken up by a 13-man orchestra! Each round gives new meaning to the phrase “stranger than fiction,” and can be played as either a competitive debate or casual mixer:
• Debate: Every round, one player argues why the “romantic relic” on the screen is a great gift, while the other argues why it’s terrible. Each has 15 seconds to make their case, and then the crowd votes with either a thumbs up or thumbs down. Feel free to rotate different students each round, judging them either individually or as a team for the side they represent. The team with the most votes by the end wins!
• Mixer: Every round, one student will come up on stage with his/her back to the crowd. Looking at the “romantic relic,” he/she will try to blindly guess if the majority of the crowd would or wouldn’t like the gift, who silently indicate their answers with a thumbs up or thumbs down. See who can read the room the best!
However you choose to play, you’re sure to have a blast from the past gifts exchanged throughout history. Have fun, share a laugh, and look forward to engaging the entire room!
