Seconds Per Question (SPQ) is a quick-fire question game where students race to answer 20 questions as fast as they can. Their time is averaged into a “seconds per question” score, and the lowest score wins.

Details

Seconds Per Question (SPQ) is an easy and fun way for your group to get to know each other while sharing plenty of laughs. The game is simple: one student takes the “hot seat” and answers 20 rapid-fire questions as quickly as possible, earning a score based on their average seconds per question. SPQ seeks to “gamify” what is usually a traditional icebreaker activity by incentivizing speed and tracking students' Seconds Per Question ratio.

Why You Should Play This Game:

It provides students with an easy way to open up, showcase their personalities, and get to know each other while keeping things fast-paced and full of laughter. Because every answer is off the cuff, no two rounds are ever the same, and the quirky questions often spark group favorites that turn into lasting inside jokes. If your group is anything like mine, certain questions will become “crowd favorites” and will become part of the group's personality. For whatever reason, “What is your favorite melon?” and “Which bird is the scariest?” were questions that randomly became our group’s favorites. Whether you’re looking for a go-to icebreaker or a game that can become part of your group’s culture, SPQ is a great way to build connection and create moments your students will remember.

How to Play Seconds Per Question (SPQ):

  • Choose three students to compete.
  • Send two students out of the room while the first student plays.
  • Put the first student in the “hot seat” (stage, stool, or special chair).
  • Start a timer and ask them 20 questions in a row.
  • Stop the timer when they finish, then divide their total time by 20 to get their SPQ score.
  • Each skipped question adds 10 seconds to their total time.
  • Repeat the process with the other two students.
  • The student with the lowest SPQ score wins! • (Optional: keep a record board of fastest times for ongoing competition.)

**Students are asked to leave the room so they cannot prepare answers in advance and improve their speed. With 20 questions, however, it is unlikely that students will remember the questions if a week or two passes between playing SPQ, allowing you to play this game multiple times. If this game is a hit, it would also be fun to keep track of who in your group holds the record for the fastest “Seconds Per Question” so that each time you play, students are not only competing against two other students but also trying to break the group record!

Playing SPQ not only sparks laughter and friendly competition but also helps students connect, share their personalities, and feel more engaged as a group every time you play.

About this Product
Encourage students to answer quickly without overthinking, as SPQ is all about speed, spontaneity, and letting personality shine through. Make the hot seat special: Use a stool, chair, or small “stage” area to make being in the hot seat feel fun and memorable—it adds to the excitement and energy of the game.
