One Word at a Time: Summer Edition is the perfect mix of ridiculous fun and meaningful connections. It’s part game, part conversation starter—and 100% guaranteed to get your students laughing, thinking, and bonding. Watch as they try to tell a story one word at a time—you never know where it’s going, but it’s always hilarious. Plus, the summer-themed prompts spark real conversations that help students open up and share. It’s silly, surprising, and seriously awesome.

As you move around the circle, each person adds just one word at a time, collaboratively building the story together. No one knows where it will go, and that’s what makes it hilarious! The story continues to grow until a leader decides to end the round or the group naturally wraps it up. It’s simple, spontaneous, and always unpredictable!

How to Play:

1. Sit everyone in a circle where they can see the screen.

2. Display the prompt.

3. Choose someone to start, then go around the circle with each person adding one word to the story.

4. Keep going until the story comes to a funny or natural end—or set a time/word limit if you want!

5. Start a new round with a new prompt and a new starter.

This Resource Includes:

  • Complete PowerPoint game file
  • Individual (10 prompts + instructions) game slides (jpeg files)
  • Title slide (jpeg file)

About this Product
Use this resource before, during, or after camp/mission trips/etc. Reverse the Circle Switch directions halfway through the story to shake things up and keep everyone on their toes. Add a Word Rule Choose a “must-use” word (like “toaster” or “glitter”) that must be worked into the story by the end. Great for themed nights! Add a Time Limit Use a timer and challenge the group to wrap up the story in under 90 seconds. It creates fun urgency and chaotic endings. Pass the Hat Instead of going around in a circle, draw names or numbers from a hat to decide the next person—keeps everyone alert and engaged. Alphabet Twist Challenge the group to start each word in sequence with the next letter of the alphabet. (e.g., “A big cat danced elegantly….”) Draw It Out Have someone draw the story live on a whiteboard or tablet as it’s told—it’s funny and helps visual learners stay engaged.
