Who doesn’t smile when they see a clown?! Whether you feel like screaming or laughing when you see a clown, remember, clowns have feelings too. Help your students face their coulrophobia (fear of clowns) while they guess if the pixelated clown shown is glad or sad. This game can be played as an up-front game or an all-play.

Up-front: Choose two guessers. Display the fully pixelated image on screen and slowly scale back the pixelations until the first person correctly guesses if the clown is glad or sad. The first one to correctly guess gets a point. Alternative play: Have each player guess within a timed limit by using a whiteboard or paddle (see below). If they guess correctly, they receive a point. The person with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Pro tip: Get a ping pong paddle and print glad or sad emoji faces that the contestant can lift up to guess. Using whiteboards to write their answers down will also work.

All-play: Have everyone in your group stand up. Display the fully pixelated image on screen and slowly scale back the pixelations within a period of time. Have each person in your group guess if the clown is glad or sad by giving a thumbs up or thumbs down. If they guess incorrectly, they are eliminated and have to sit down. The last one standing is the winner.

Depending on how much you want to traumatize your students, play creepy clown music in the background of this game. We provided a Spotify link in the Gameplay Overview.

There are plenty of people who are grateful that you do what you do. Your students are, their families are, and your church is, even though they may not say it often enough. I want to say thanks on behalf of them, and model the way we need to be saying thanks to the leaders that serve alongside us—in ten different ways—through this ebook.

Thank YOU!
