This works best as an ALL-PLAY game. Begin by dividing students into groups of at least 2-3.
Familiarize your students with what the ‘Blues’ genre of music is. When you think of the Blues, you think of a sad song about misfortune, grief, betrayal, or regret. It is a very musical and lyrically emotional genre.
Give each pair/group some paper and a pen/pencil to write their lyrics on. Give them 2 minutes to write a 30-second Blues song based on the phrase on the screen. This game consists of 10 different phrases to choose from. Use all of them or choose the ones you think suit your group best. The idea is to have each pair/group sing about the SAME phrase and decide which Blues song was best.
Use the attached list of Blues instrumental songs that can be found on music streaming sites, YouTube, or can be downloaded on iTunes. Use the same song for the entire game or switch it up for each round.
Once 2 minutes are up, have students perform their Blues song in front of everyone.
Have prizes for those who win each round.
