In his gospel, Luke tells us of the moment Jesus began his public ministry by opening up the scroll of Isaiah and dropping his mic right there in the synagogue. Jesus speaks to the hopes and joys people had been waiting for, and opens up the transformative work of it all to those who believe, then and now.

This VIVA! Series will guide your group through Jesus’s sermon and, from later in his life, his mind-blowing promise that those who believe in him will do even greater things—and that we have everything we need to be a part of it all, right now, today.

Week 1: What does it mean to know the poor well enough to be able to truly bring good news, today?

Week 2: Is there anything more intimidating that being asked to free prisoners and restore sight to those who are blind? Well, Jesus asks it of us, and we’ll discuss how that can look, today.

Week 3: Today, we can be a part of setting the oppressed free and proclaiming the year of the Lord’s favor. But first we should take a look at what that actually means and why it’s worth fighting for.

Week 4: Phew, we finally worked our way through the high-bar topics from within Jesus’s first sermon and can move on to some nice words he shared near the end of his life, right? Like when he said “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these…” Uh, what? Greater things than Jesus? What do we do with that??
