What if we’re too too familiar with the classic story?

Details

Thanks to nativity scenes and Christmas pageants, most people are familiar with the story of Jesus’ birth…but maybe we’re too familiar? The fact is, nativity scenes and your typical Christmas pageants that chronologically tell the Christmas story aren’t the full story. When you read the Gospel accounts of the birth of Christ, you have two different stories (Matthew and Luke) that don’t line up easily. Additionally, John offers a metaphorical account while Mark, the first gospel written, apparently didn’t feel that the virgin birth story was worth mentioning.

Rather than just taking the Gospel records and combining them to fit a historical timeline, it’s important to take the time to understand what each God-inspired author is trying to communicate with the way they tell the story. Each writer is purposeful about what they include and why. In this VIVA! Series we will invite your group into exploring these elements as you explore the Christmas stories of the Bible. Here is what we’ll be discussing:

Week 1: Mark’s (Non)Account
Week 2: Matthew’s Account
Week 3: Luke’s Account
Week 4: John’s Account

This Resource Includes:

  • 4 weeks of small group curriculum (objective, activity, discussion, response)
  • 6 background slides
